The Rosamunde Pilcher Tour
Cornish author Rosamunde Pilcher was born in 1924 in Lelant, a pretty seaside village a short drive from Penzance. She attended the School of St Clare in Penzance – the school has since closed, but the building and grounds are a five minute walk from Venton Vean. Her novels are set in the Cornish landscape of her childhood and many have been adapted for television by German broadcaster ZDF. Filming is often done on location in and around Penzance – Sturmische Begegnung, Sommer am Meer, Wolken am Horizont, Wind der Hoffnung and Zeit der Erkenntnis are some of the adaptations that were filmed nearby. Here at Venton Vean we can provide detailed information, maps and suggested itineraries for visiting the most memorable locations from these dramas including the Rosamunde Pilcher tour.
You might start with a tour of Penzance itself, including the famous Art Deco Jubilee Pool which was used for filming in 2018. Beyond Penzance, the iconic St Michael’s Mount has featured in both British and German Rosamunde Pilcher adaptations and is just 5km from our bed and breakfast. The fishing village of Mousehole is 4.5km away and from here you can walk along the coast to Lamorna Cove, both popular Rosamunde Pilcher locations. Zennor and St Ives are also just a short drive away, where keen fans will spot landmarks from the TV dramas.
A little further afield are the stunning Porthcurno Beach and world famous cliff-top Minack Theatre, which have also provided dramatic backdrops. The imposing cliffs of Land’s End – Britain’s most westerly point – are 14.5km away and featured in Sturmische Begegnung, while Godolphin House and Estate (14.5km) and the harbour town of Porthleven (17km) have also been used for filming.
Some of the regular filming locations for the BBC’s recent Poldark series are close to Venton Vean, including Penberth Cove (13km), Porthgwarra Cove (15km) and the spectacular cliff-top mines at Botallack (11km). Again, we can provide information, maps and directions, and if you’re lucky you might spot the latest Rosamunde Pilcher adaptation in action!
